are you ready to bring some humanness to your leadership game?

tl;dr

Being a ‘human’ leader goes beyond anything you read in a leadership book, article (including this one), or learn in a professional development course. It’s about embracing connection through our shared humanity.

Why be a more human leader?

We don’t need to tell you that your staff are people with complex emotions, belief systems and values.

As a leader, if you can leverage each staff member’s unique drivers and perspectives, you can cultivate a culture of trust which in turn, will drive engagement and performance.

So, how can you level up your humanness in leadership? Read on.

5 ways to be a more human leader:

1. Be a human 🫀

You are a human having a leadership experience (not the other way around). Allow your team to get to know the human behind the title - which means showing some vulnerability and sharing who you are. Share the highs and lows (leaders aren’t immune from having an off day either, right). Do your staff know about your hobbies, your family, an upcoming anniversary or special occasion?

2. Don't be afraid to show emotion ❤️‍🩹

A common misconception amongst leadership circles (in our view, the wrong ones) is that a good leader has no emotion. It's okay to feel disappointed that a colleague or stakeholder didn't deliver. Its understandable (and entirely appropriate) that telling a valued employee they are losing their job in a restructure hurts you too. We’re not suggesting a group crying session, we’re suggesting you don’t need to ‘save face’.

3. Be empathetic 👥

Empathy is a critical leadership skill (it’s a buzz word for a reason). Take the time to deeply understand your team members on a personal level - consider their individual experiences, and challenges. Show compassion and practice active listening (don't just listen to speak). Create an environment where your staff feel seen, heard, and valued.

4. Prioritise connection 🤝

In a hybrid working world, it’s more important than ever to make a dedicated effort to connect with each member of your team. Organise a social coffee. Plan a team-building activity. True connection won't happen while you're completing work; and certainly takes more than just working together in the same space. Make connection a priority.

5. Never stop asking for feedback 💬

Leaders make mistakes too (it’s trial and error). Take ownership of your decisions and actions, and acknowledge your mistakes. Leadership is a learned skill built over time (not just with a title).
